Is anyone on this list able to assist in interpreting this?

Hi Funnel Web users - is anyone able to explain this strange anomaly in my stats to me? I've posted before but haven't had any response.
I've just run stats on a site and looked at the mean path.
This is what a lot of results show: A hit to the page, and then a ton of downloads of the same document.
1. / 2. /news.html 3. /nepms/air/air_nepm_review_issues_paper.html 4. /pdf/Air_Quality_NEPM/AAQ_DP_FINAL_4_JUNE_07.pdf 5. /pdf/Air_Quality_NEPM/AAQ_DP_FINAL_4_JUNE_07.pdf 6. /pdf/Air_Quality_NEPM/AAQ_DP_FINAL_4_JUNE_07.pdf
I thought it might mean there are 3 pages to this PDF, but no there are at least 20 pages, so what does this mean path tell me? Someone downloaded the same file 3 times?
Many (most) entries in my mean path look like this.
1. /ephc/water_recycling.html 2. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 3. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 4. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 5. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 6. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 7. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf 8. /pdf/water/WaterRecyclingGuidelines-02_Nov06_.pdf
What exactly can I deduce from this?
Also, even more confusing is running the same stats with the same filters using 4.5 (mac) and 5 (also mac) and getting wildly different visitor numbers and most popular/least popular pages.
Which one is more reliable? Why are they so different? One records 20gig of downloads and one records 40 - that's a huge difference from the same stats...

I do not know the answer to your question and in fact have seen the same thing with our logs. So, I am adding my voice to your request. Anyone???

Hi,
I think someone has posted similar questions in the past. From memory the general consensus seemed to suggest that the Adobe PDF browser plug-in commonly used to view PDF's embedded inside a browser window, downloads PDFs on a page by page basis to speed up delivery and requests each page as the user views it. This in turn creates multiple entries in your log files for the same PDF.
Therefore what your seeming in your analysis is not the downloading of PDF file multiple times, it is users viewing multiple pages of a PDF.
As for your second question, I haven't tried running the same set of logs through different versions of Funnel Web, so can't confirm these results, but I would suggest it is probably down to differences in the algorithms used to calculate the stats between different version of the software, or possibly differing user settings?
Sorry I couldn't be more help with this question.
Thanks,
Mike

Many thanks.... I'll look into this.
I just need to know what to tell clients when they ask, because it looks weird...

Hi Matt,
I wondered if you are still using FunnelWeb? I -- once again -- was trying to explain the Hits vs. Downloads, etc., and read the thread on that topic. I am wondering if you ever figured it all out? One pdf counts as a download, but if it is multiple pages, then it coud be one download and several hits??
I would love to talk to you outside of forum.
Bobbie
